From High School to Med School
June 15, 2011 Last week, 10 central Iowa high schoolers got a taste of life as a medical student. They attended lectures, performed tests in labs and investigated real-life medical scenarios. The experience was part of Youth Education in Science and Medicine (YES MED), a week-long camp hosted by Central Iowa AHEC and Des Moines University. The students spent five days on the DMU campus learning about science, medicine and health careers. Each day’s activities focused on a different area of science, like microbiology and anatomy. The campers took what they learned from lectures and labs and used it to solve patient cases in the Iowa Simulation Center. With the help of DMU medical students, they utilized clinical equipment to diagnose Harvey, the medical mannequin. YES MED is held every summer for a select group of central Iowa juniors.
