Marriage and Family Therapist

Overview

Marriage and family therapists deal with issues that stem from the relationships between married couples, children and families. They treat and help families cope with mental and emotional problems, nervous disorders, substance abuse and other issues.

Work Environment

Therapists work in hospitals, private practices, clinics, schools and family service centers. They must have good listening and communication skills to relate to the problems and feelings of patients. Marriage and family therapists have a normal work week, but may need to work around a family's schedule and be available evenings and weekends.

Training

Marriage and family therapists must have at least a master’s degree in family therapy from an accredited program.

Licensure and Certification

A minimum of two years of supervised clinical experience and a passing score on the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy are required for state licensure in Iowa.
