Years in Profession:

1. What is your typical work day like?

I meet with clients, attend meetings and do administrative work (phone, email, paperwork). I start around around 8 a.m. and leave around 5 p.m.

2. What is the most rewarding part of your job? The most challenging?

The most rewarding part of my job is assisting people working to make improvements in their lives. The most challenging part is keeping up with paperwork.

3. What is the biggest myth or misconception about your career or field?

The role of diagnosis and medications is over-emphasized. Given our level of knowledge, mental health treatment should look different from a medical model.

4. What steps did you take in high school and college to help prepare you for your career?

I took a “peer helpers” class in high school and worked as a YMCA camp counselor in college. In retrospect, both were impactful experiences.

5. What did you find difficult during your career preparation? How did you overcome these obstacles?

Jumping through all the hoops. In addition to the work of completing college and a master’s program, a counselor must take additional tests, pay money and wait for state licensure processes. Persistence and focus are the remedies.

6. What do you see as the strengths and skills needed to succeed in your career?

Liking people — believing what they say, supporting their ideas and opinions and listening well. Also, critical thinking skills.

7. What advice would you offer to students interested in pursuing a career as a marriage and family therapist?

Enjoy the journey of school, doing a practicum and getting licensed. Get experience in paraprofessional roles where you get to be with good people doing important work.
